Well that's that then, the leaves are falling fast from the trees, the temperatures have dropped and the first of the frosts have arrived on Plot 15C. I woke up early Wednesday morning to head up the allotment to film the Question time video over on my Youtube...

An Autumnal Walk

12 months ago by Katie
Today has been beautiful, the skies have been blue, the trees are changing colour and even though it's getting a bit colder I decided to venture out for a walk around the farm whilst Charles was busy in the shed. It takes roughly 20 minutes to walk to the f...

The growing year is ending for the majority of vegetables on plot 15c and the courgette is one of them, not that it's a courgette anymore! Turn your back for a few days and those lovely tiny courgettes will soon turn into marrows and I had just the recipe for ...

Happy Halloween

Help

I've been neglecting the allotment a lot lately and even though it's been pushed to one side I'm pleasantly surprised at how much produce has managed to grow in my constant absence. Isn't mother nature just amazing? My new plot neighbours popped up with their family and asked me 'what grows best?' and it got me thinking about the past year. I couldn't for the life of me think what grew best because if I'm honest everything has. Not that I'm showing off at all, everything has grown but not everything has grown to it's best (for instance the red cabbages are the size of sprouts!) But when I look back at the year and realise that I actually haven't given my allotment my full attention or time. That I had basically sown seeds, planted out seedlings and simply left them to grow... I'm just amazed that anything grew at all. Obviously if I had given the allotment more time then things probably would have grown better, but life sure gets in the way and I wouldn't have it any other way. The thing is to just be grateful for what you do have and for the time you do get to spend doing what you love. Anyway back to my allotment adventures! I popped up the allotment yesterday afternoon with the intention of filming a video and sowing some broad beans but like always I was distracted with other jobs. Plot 15c is looking bare and a little bit sorry for itself so I decided a tidy up was in order, plus I couldn't well sow my broad beans without weeding the area first! I removed the bamboo bean structure and tidied them away, ripped up the dead annual flowers, pruned the perennials and dug over the empty vegetable beds. I also took the time to sort out my saved seed collection that had been drying in the shed over the past month. It's something I've been meaning to do every year but never got round to doing, so I made it my mission to try and save as much seed as possible this year. Something so easy and simple to do if you give it some time, plus it will save you pennies next year! I sat down at my table with my allotment notebook, a pen and some brown paper pay packets to store the flower seeds away. There's some Scabiosa 'Sternkugel', Zinnia 'Giant Dahlia mix', Allium 'Shaerolephalon', mixed Poppies, mixed Sweet Peas, Sunflower 'Mongolian Giant' and Cosmos. Of course by the time this was done it was dark and I couldn't sow my broad beans or do any filming!
