I have a confession to share with you and I just can’t keep it a secret any longer… I’m truly and utterly in love with daffodils! It’s funny because 2 years ago I would never have imagined that I would be planting narcissus bulbs into my old water trough. That area was specifically put by for my precious tulips, who until now have been my favourite flowers to grow on plot 15c.
It all started last year when ‘Thalia’ bloomed in the lasagne container for the first time. I fell in love with the stunning pure white petals and the double blooms on each stem, they were nothing like the traditional daffodils and my hunger for new varieties grew inside me.
Lucky for me we visit a lot of garden shows and get to see lots of beautiful flowers and bulbs for sale, although this isn’t such a blessing for my purse! I came across a company called Pheasant Acre Plants last year and treated myself to new tulip bulbs for the trough as well as some new narcissus bulbs which just so happened to jump out at me. ‘My Story’, ‘Cheerfulness’ and ‘Sophies Girl’ were all planted back in November and only the latter is still yet to reveal itself. First came ‘My Story’ which took my breath away with it’s gentle and vintage tones and now ‘Cheerfulness’ has taken a piece of my heart with not just 1 delicate bloom but 3 per stem!
All that’s left to bloom on the narcissus front is ‘Sophies Girl’ and I’m so excited to see her show her pretty face. The tulips are a little poor this year but I picked the first two ‘Spring Green’ tulips from the trough and added them to my little bouquet and I nearly burst with pride. I can’t explain how happy this little bunch of daffodils makes me but it’s reawakened my love of flowers and made me even more excited for the year ahead.
It just goes to show that when you broaden your horizons you can find new things to fall in in love with and I think my relationship with Narcissus has only just begun…

Hi Katie, I get up early and as we live in a very rural spot, I head outside to the garden in my dressing gown and see the difference a day makes! My daffys are so beautiful too, Christmas roses (up North) flowering and primroses (prefer the paler colours amongst the cow slips. Couldn’t get more joy from a Van Gogh painting, just me flowers!.
Ordered a packet of Phacelia seeds, Bees adore them and the sweet smell is magic. A beautiful hue of blue/purple. Our adjoining farmer sowed half a field of them last year, simply glorious when you walked by, better than Chanel.
The farmer also gave us a trailer load of manure and yes, I was over the moon, puzzling to a non gardener I suppose.
Oh my gosh Barbara, your start to the day sounds so perfect! I’d loved to have my own rural house with a huge garden where I can enjoy a cup of tea every morning. Flowers are so important to a garden aren’t they, mine make me smile everytime I see them and I can’t wait to be surrounded by more. Your garden sounds so beautiful, how lucky you are to know such a helpful farmer!
