Hooray! Today is the Winter Solstice and I am welcoming it with open arms. It’s the shortest day of the year which means one thing, the daylight hours will start increasing and we can start to spend more time outside.
I love this time of year but I am longing for Summer, not only the heat but I’m missing the amount of time I could spend up the allotment pottering away in the shed and watching the bees bumbling around the plot. Time has been hard to come by since the nights have been drawing in, in the Summer I was up the allotment until 10pm and these days it starts getting dark at 4pm, whilst I’m busy working. Which means evenings and early mornings were out of the questions and it left allotment time for the weekends only.
So here’s to less evenings working up the allotment in the dark and to more time in the glorious sunshine!
Happy Winter Solstice everyone x

Those pictures are gorgeous!
Indeed, here’s to the longer days! X
I love the lights. Very befitting for Winter Solstice. I guess it doesn’t snow where you are. Would you like me to send you some from here? LOL Happy Christmas! ~ Nancy
It hasn’t snowed in ages and I miss it! Usually we get snow around January/February but last year we didn’t get any and the year before we had snow before Christmas. It’s just been so mild here this year. Whereabouts are you? x
I live in Northeastern Oregon USA, Katie. In the center of the beautiful Wallowa Mountinas, near Idaho and Washington states.
Happy Solstice to you too, I found your youtube videos this evening and now your blog- I’m sitting up with bronchitis so will have a good read back into the archive. What a little treasure of a blog!
I begin my own attempts at gardening (apart from herbs which I’ve always grown) in the NEw YEar with a square foot garden and lots of advice and support from gardening friends. Well done on all fronts, Katie! Following.
Oh dear! I hope you are better by now? I’m glad you are enjoying my adventures and thank you so much for taking the time to read my blog and watch my videos 🙂
How exciting! I bet you can’t wait to get started, although I do love planning xx
The lights look very pretty, I’m looking forward to longer days at my allotment. Happy Christmas!
Your shed looks beautifully cosy and so pretty with those lights. Happy Christmas!
happy solstice to you!!! I am in the US, in an area where we dont see quite the dramatic change in daylight - dark by 9 in summer, but the 5 pm dark is really disheartening this time of year. I am quite an anglophile, and love the term that the days are ‘drawing in’. and the idea that at the end of january the days have lengthened sufficiently to have a walk after tea.
It’s funny isn’t it? I never used to think about the daylight hours before owning my allotment but now I miss my evening wanders to the plot to do some digging. It still gets dark here at around 4pm, although I am finding time to do some sewing so I guess theres always a plus side 🙂 x
