Well hasn’t the sunshine been glorious this past weekend? After a complete and utter wash out with constant rain from Wednesday through to Friday we were blessed with blue skies and some beautiful Spring time weather, perfect for some gardening. It’s one of the things I miss most when I’m in Wales so I couldn’t resist the opportunity to get my hands dirty and jumped at the chance!
Charles Mum has a greenhouse in the garden where she likes to grow a row of tomatoes and a cucumber. Last year I bought some plants from a garden show we were selling at and she harvested a bumper crop all Summer long. So this year I’ve done the same and bought some healthy look seedlings from a local garden centre that we visited on Mother’s Day. There’s 3 moneymaker varieties and then one mini Italian plum variety. I also purchased a pack of mixed lettuce plants and a pack of French breakfast radish seeds that will be planted out and grow happily underneath the tomato plants.
I also want to quickly mention that Wyevale garden centres have the best range of vegetable plug plants and they are great value for money. Me and my Dad always head there if we are in desperate need of some plants for the allotment!
I spent a glorious hour planting up the tomato and lettuce seedlings into the soil that I had prepared a good few weeks ago. I had added some well rotted farm manure to help add nutrients back into the soil and gave it all a good weeding too. I also erected some canes by each tomato plant so they won’t need to be disturbed and they are ready to go. Fingers crossed she will have a bumper crop like last year with the added bonus of salad leaves too!
Now I’m back in Hampshire and left strict instructions to Charles to make sure the greenhouse is watered!
