Everytime I pop up the allotment I swear the tulips have grown another few inches. All this sunny weather must be doing them some good because they are steaming ahead, it won’t be long until the tulip trough is bursting with colour and I just can’t wait!
Altogether there are 56 tulip bulbs in the trough, all brought from Sarah Raven. There’s 8 x Spring Green, 8 x Mistress Grey, 8 x Groenland, 8 x Apricot Beauty and 20 x Brandy Snap. There were also 6 garlic bulbs left over so I placed them at the end of the line of tulips to see how they grow. Then of course there’s still room to put the gherkin at the far end of the trough so it can climb up the hazel support I made for it last year. The trough is going to be jammed packed this year that’s for sure!
As well as the 56 tulips in the trough I planted 8 outside by the gate, there’s also the mixed tulip bulbs in the chimney pot and the small galvanised tub which I planted the year before last. Unfortunately the deer helped themselves to the beautiful blooms before I could appreciate them, leaving only one individual tulip to flower. That is the main reason I fenced my plot off, so sorry deer, you’ll have to go somewhere else this year to eat tulips!

This is my new favourite blog 🙂 I just wish we had allotments in New Zealand. We have community gardens but it’s not the same as having your own little plot to be lost in. Your allotment is inspiring.
