I’ve been cooking a lot lately, using up all those leeks and parsnips still in the ground and the pumpkins and squashes that are still in storage in the shed. One of my favourite dishes to make is soup, it’s so easy and simple to make but ever so heartwarming and delicious. I’m slowly collecting favourite recipes which I write down in my own recipe journal so they are easy to find, hopefully they can be passed down through generations to enjoy as much as I have.
I have a few favourite cookery books so I thought I would take the time and share them with you. I’m a real sucker for a beautiful recipe book and I often buy books only to never get round to using them. This selection here though are my all time favourites, my go to books when I need inspiration and to be honest, some of them are just nice to look at too!
- River Cottage Handbook - Fruit
- River Cottage Handbook - Veg Patch
- River Cottage Handbook - Herbs
- A Good Egg by Genevieve Taylor
- Tender Volume I by Nigel Slater
- The Garden to Kitchen Expert by Judith Wills and Dr.D.G Hessayon
- Abundance by Alys Fowler
- The Thrifty Forager by Alys Fowler
- The Edible Garden by Alys Fowler
- The Preserving Book by Lynda Brown
- Jamie’s Ministry of Food by Jamie Oliver
- Fork to Fork by Monty and Sarah Don
These are my three most favourite cookery books that I own, the ones that I go to first for inspiration and ideas. I found the centre one in a garden centre and it’s jam packed with everything you need to know about each vegetable and fruit and how to cook it as well as plenty of recipes. It’s alphabetical which is perfect and tells you how to store your produce too.
The Nigel Slater and Monty Don books are simply just beautiful. There’s lots of information about the gardens, the people and how to grow the produce aswell as actually cooking it, so they are much more then recipe books. The Fork to Fork book also had a corresponding television programme which is great, you can find it over on Youtube. I also have my eye on Nigel Slaters Tender Volume II which is all about fruit, I keep hinting at it for my birthday so fingers crossed 🙂
Happy cooking everyone! x

I have many of the same books on my bookshelves! I dont have the Fork to Fork book but watch the series on Youtube fairly frequently and as you say its very good. We are heading into the cooler months now and I am really looking forward to having my favourite soups.
Good choice of books, i have a few of them ,, saying that i also like the old Mrs Beeton’s cookbook
I have quite a few of these on my shelves! And the rest of them are on my wishlist for my birthday in June!
And not just recipe books either, I’ve got a few gardening books and a chicken-keeping manual on the wishlist too! (Chicken-keeping manual is just fuelling my wishful thinking though really, I’m a long way off keeping chickens!!)
I’ve got a Kindle for things like biographies and stories, but for things like this that I’m going to want to refer to all the time, you’ve got to have a proper book!!

Really enjoying the ‘new format’ website. Love the receipe books and the gardening books blogs, Im off to my bookcase after I finish this comment to find out what my piles look like !
I’d completely forgotten ‘Fork to Fork’ which I avidly watched when it was originally broadcast, so I’m going to relish the youtube re-runs. Thanks
