The All Weather Gardener

8 months ago by Katie
So the plans to spend the weekend up the allotment were thwarted by the good old British weather yet again. This time dear storm Doris was here to say hello and she brought wind and rain with her, not the ideal thing to garden in! However, on Sunday morning I ...

Free Rhubarb? Yes Please!

8 months ago by Katie
I love it when a plan comes together and when that plan involves free plants! A plot on our site has the best (and longest) row of rhubarb which always produces hundreds of delicious stalks, it just so happens that the owner recently lifted the crowns and spli...

Adding Something Back…

8 months ago by Katie
I've been neglecting the poor allotment the past year or so due to being so busy with both my work and personal life so I thought it was about time that I gave something back to it. The tulip trough and the archway have been suffering and last year was one of ...

Signs of Spring

8 months ago by Katie
Spring is nearly here and I couldn't be more excited! It's been a while since I've visited the allotment and it's been a long time since I actually got my hands dirty. I managed to take a few hours off work due to working all Sunday and decided to head up the ...

Potato day

8 months ago by Katie
The day has finally arrived... the day that we purchased our seed potatoes! It's a huge day in the allotment calendar and one of the staple crops that we grow, we eat potatoes a lot of the time so it's a big deal for us and one of our most important crops. We ...

The first sowings of the year

I spent the first afternoon pottering around in the greenhouse on Sunday and I couldn't have been happier. It feels so good to finally be sowing seeds and getting my hands dirty and this is just the beginning. Next month the list of seeds to sow is three times...

Plot 15c Plan 2017

8 months ago by Katie
It's one of my most favourite times of the year, the time when you can dream and put all your ideas down onto paper. A time when it's grey and miserable outside but in your head it's full of all the pretty flowers and delicious vegetables that you'll be growin...

Winter Harvests

A perfect morning to prune

9 months ago by Katie
The original plan for this weekend was to spend one whole day up the allotment where I could tidy, prune and dig the plot ready for Spring. What I didn't anticipate was the heavy frosts we've been having lately... The ground was far too frozen to do anything w...

My rain soaked allotment trip on Sunday was not only productive but I managed to come home with some delicious homegrown goodies for our Sunday roast. The flower sprouts have done brilliantly this year and there are still 3 stalks left to harvest, all full to the brim with these yummy little kalettes. A mixture between sprouts and kale and full of vitamins, they have been one the easiest things to grow this year and provided me with lots of harvests. I decided to cut a whole stalk to take home with me, we were feeding 5 adults and the spare sprouts can easily be put in the fridge for a few days. I was not only excited to be harvesting a crop in the depths of Winter but it was also the first time that I could properly use the new knife my boyfriend bought for me a few weeks ago. I've had my eye on the Opinel saw No.12 for a while now and thought it would come in handy up the allotment, I wasn't wrong! I already own both the pruning and original No.8 knives so this was a welcome addition to the family, you can never have too many knives and I highly recommed every gardener to carry one around in their pocket at all times. You never know when you might need to cut some string, prune a rose bush or harvest flower sprouts! The saw cut through the thick stalk with such ease and I carried my tree of flower sprouts home as proudly as carrying a new born baby! P.S I can't leave without sharing my other news with you... my purple sprouting broccoli is finally starting to sprout and I am so unbelievably happy about it! I may have done a crazy allotment lady dance when I first saw it... thank goodness no one else was there to see me!
