The Little Purple Shed

Its that time of year when nothing is really growing (including weeds Huzzah!) which means I could finally get round to giving my little shed a lick of paint and what better colour to paint it then purple?! It just so happened that the sun shone alday, basking...

The end and the beginning

4 years ago by Katie
So thats it then... after a few good months of growing it was time to say goodbye to some of my faithful veg! To be fair I was surprised to get any crops out of my plot this year seeing as I got my little slice of land in July, but I worked hard and managed to...

Strawberry Fields

4 years ago by Katie
My name is Katie and I have a strawberry addiction! Strawberries were the first plants I have ever grown myself, and this was when I was 22 years old. My dad had just been given his very own allotment plot and I was officially put in charge of a strawberry ...

Happy Bonfire Night!

4 years ago by Katie
I'm not really one to celebrate bonfire night, I even forgot to buy a pumpkin this year for halloween (although I do desperately want to grow some on my plot next year!) So when my dad mentioned buying a box of fireworks for the garden I thought why not? We ow...

First time Foraging

4 years ago by Katie
I decided to take a well earned day off from allotment duties today, even though my shed needs painting, my strawberry runners need planting and I need to get some broad beans in the ground! I did however, go foraging for the first time in my entire 24 years o...

Winter is Coming…

4 years ago by Katie
It's that time of year again (and only 57 days until christmas might I add), darkness is upon us by 5pm and I seem to already be wearing 4 layers of clothing and it's not even that cold yet! What can I say? I'm cold blooded and what better way to warm myself u...

Hello world!

4 years ago by Katie
So I have finally decided to start writing a blog about my allotment plot, the place where I spend half my time weeding, digging and having cups of tea in my shed! First things first, here is a photograph of my plot the day I agreed to take it over on Tuesday ...

Help

Its that time of year when nothing is really growing (including weeds Huzzah!) which means I could finally get round to giving my little shed a lick of paint and what better colour to paint it then purple?! It just so happened that the sun shone alday, basking my plot in glorious sunshine and making sure my paint dried quickly, even if I did take nearly 3 hours applying the first coat. I think it needs a few more coats yet but atleast it is a tiny bit protected during the winter months, unless we are blessed with yet more sunny weekends very soon! (I also painted a bird house to match but I will post about that once its up and running) Other jobs on plot 15C included digging the area of dirt where my French beans and potted strawberry runners were living until recently. This surprisingly didnt take very long, or maybe I just enjoy digging too much to realise how long it took! Anyway, that appears to be all the digging done, excluding the area where my pallet picket fence is being stored, which reminds me, I must build my fence soon. I also had enough time to install my extra large water butt onto some old railway sleeper chunks, all it needs now is some guttering and we should be full to the brim by spring time!   I also got my first ever seed catalogue in the post this week which has got me super excited for springtime and got me in the planning mood. I'm thinking a wild flower patch with cut flowers, a hedgehog home, a toad abode and a bug hotel! I also want to grow some cranberries in hanging baskets and even try my hand at growing popcorn (which I never even knew you could grow!) Its exciting times but alas, theres something more important just around the bend and its creeping up very quickly... CHRISTMAS! And I havent even started making my gifts yet, wish me luck :S
