I fell in love with tulips 3 years ago when I first decided to plant up my trough with the little Spring bulbs. Since then it’s been one of the things I most look forward to seeing on plot 15c and this year they just so happen to be blooming a few weeks earlier than usual… and I’m not complaining! Our first show starts on the 21st of April and from then on every weekend is near enough full up so I’m super happy not to have missed this years display.
I am so glad that I decided to go ahead and plant the trough up with tulips instead of using it for vegetables. Sometimes you have to have a bit of colour in your life to make you smile and boy do these tulips make me smile! The trough has bloomed better than last year after I added the 6X natural fertiliser in late Winter, however not all the tulips are producing buds so I’ll be looking into this. I might need to remove the bulbs for Winter storage or even replace the ones that aren’t blooming. None the less I am so pleased with my little tulips and I just love seeing them swaying in the wind as I walk up to my plot.
Not only is the trough blooming beautifully but the Lasagne style container is putting on a spectacular show, one I want to replicate around the whole allotment and the garden next year because it’s just so beautiful! I planted the bulbs up in December last year, a little later then usual and the snow drops only had one bloom. However the Narcissus Triandrus Thalia and the Pale Peony Flowered Tulip collection from Sarah Raven are both looking stunning in the Spring sunshine. I especially love the rich double tulip blooms which contrast so well with the narcissus, the perfect match. The Pale Peony collection includes the tulips ‘La Belle Époque’, ‘Danceline’ and ‘White Touch’. Although for some reason I have a very dark orange double tulip in the mix which isn’t meant to be there… I think this one is called ‘Orange Princess’ and must have been mixed up with the dark and light tulip peony collections… Never mind, it’s pretty none the less!
Today was the day that I decided to cut some of the tulips to take home, some were looking a little worse for wear and I wanted to catch them before any rain came down. It’s been sunny for over a week now so we need some of that rain water! Even though it’s a shame to take them away from the allotment I think they’ll be appreciated and brighten up the kitchen table at home. I’m going to miss seeing them up the allotment but soon they’ll be more flowers blooming and the whole allotment will be coming to life.

They look lovely Katie! I bought the same Pale Peony flowered Tulip kit from Sarah Raven and planted them in my Mothers garden as a gift for her. I was round at hers the other day and she took me outside to show me them flowering. My very first thought when I saw them was “where the heck did those orange ones come from?!” I guess there was a mix up at their packing department!
