I am so pleased to tell you all that the frogs are back in town!
I was working on project pond V.2 yesterday when I decided to remove the water forget me not, it was getting a bit too big for it’s pot and needed a good clean anyway. So I pulled it out of the water and 6 frogs jumped out and started swimming around, I hadn’t scared them away after all! They must have just been hiding from me all this time but boy was I happy to see them. I spent the next hour watching them and even talking to them (I told you I was crazy didn’t I?!)
It became a sort of mission to try and finish the pond that evening so the frogs could settle down again, I felt a little mean taking away the water forget me not and wanted to get it back into the water as soon as possible. So I very carefully placed some more rocks into the depths of the pond to use as hiding places for the frogs and for the new plants to sit on. I also placed some larger rocks around the outside edge to create a shady place for the frogs and the wildlife to seek shelter. I re-potted the water forget not and placed that back into the pond along with my new Caltha palustris and the ‘Blue flag’ water iris. Last but not least I had to fill the pond back up as all this nice sunny weather had made the water drop by 4 inches! Rain isn’t forecast for another few days and the frogs couldn’t get out of the pond very easily so tap water had to do, and I happily saw some frogs sitting underneath the shade of the rocks before I left. I managed to film the whole thing so I’ll be putting a new video on very shortly!
I am very pleased with how the pond looks now and I’m happy with the rockery around the far back, I’ll be planting some small alpine flowers on there to make it look a little prettier but so far so good. I can’t wait until the flowers start to grow inside the pond, the water forget me not was particularly beautiful last year. There’s also going to be plenty of flowers around the outside of the pond too just like last year, cosmos, verbena, sunflowers, scabious and not forgetting the evergreen grass I planted a few days ago. Hopefully the frogs will love it as much as I do, because if they are happy then I’m happy too!

I only discovered your site a few days ago. I was looking for inspiration for an allotment as I have just got one. I don’t even have the keys yet but I’m soooooooooo excited. Your face reminded me of my niece Stacey. I have been hooked ever since. I will kee watching for more info and help. I have a phobia of frogs but I love your pond and would like to do something like that for my Grandson Harvey. I will keep you posted on that. (23 years of fear) I feel encouraged by your whole laid back attitude and intend to enjoy my new adventure regardless of mistakes. Have a good day.. Voni
Katy…..I am so glad your frogs are back…..it is exciting, and no, you are not crazy…..talking to them is just what I would do to. In fact you have inspired me to put in a little pond this year too, on our property…..I’ll send pictures. Thank you for so much enjoyment.
Hi Katie, I am glad your frogs stuck around they are such good garden friends in the fight against slugs. I hope the frogs settled back in once all the work was done. Looking forward to more pond updates.
Happy Gardening!
