One of my proudest achievements this past year has been the sunflowers that I grew on the allotment. Every year I grow them and every year I try to get them to beat my height of 6 foot but every year I have failed… That was until now however!
The 6 seedlings that I lovingly sowed, looked after and planted to the right of my shed grew to over 10 foot high and it made my heart smile. The variety is Mongolian Giant from Chiltern Seeds and I couldn’t have wished for anything better. For some strange reason I’ve always wanted to grow Sunflowers taller than me and my dreams came true. Now I can’t wait to grow even more of the monsters next year and I’m planning on at least doubling the amount so I can have more of the sunny faces staring down at me.
Of course the sunflowers flowered a while back now and the heads have been rather sad looking this past month. They have drooped over and the stalks have bent so it was time to cut them back for the next stage of their lives to begin. I always like to leave a few heads out for the birds to feed on, they absolutely love snacking on sunflower seeds and I’m sure they won’t take long to demolish these heads. However, because I was blessed with even more sunflowers then usual I’ve decided to save one to use in the kitchen, and the largest one will be saved back for some seed. I’m planning on growing more sunflowers next year and hopefully these monster seeds will help to grow even taller ones!
