I harvested the first lot of broad beans from the allotment at the weekend and I couldn’t be happier. It was only a small handful mind you but you just can’t beat the first harvest from something you’ve grown from seed!
I sowed these ‘Aquadulce Claudia’ broad beans back in November and since then they’ve been happily growing away over Winter. They’ve been loving this warmer weather though as they have shot up over this past month, they are now roughly 4 foot high beating last year when they only grew to about 2 foot. Last year was a terrible year for my broad beans and I didn’t harvest much from them at all, the dreaded black fly affected them badly and the poor weather stunted the growth. This year looks to be a better year for me and I’m looking forward to harvesting lots of broad beans over the next month, the flowers keep on coming and the bees just adore them which is perfect. We ate these fresh from the pod in a salad with some homegrown radishes too, delicious!
