I probably say this pun every single year but… Sow it begins!
Me and Ted had our first greenhouse session of the year on Sunday and it felt really good, all of a sudden Spring doesn’t seem that far away and I for one can’t wait. I’m so sick of all this rain and mud now! I wouldn’t actually mind it so much if we got a bit of snow but whilst the rest of the UK lies under a blanket of white we are still trudging through mud everywhere…
Sowing seeds has always been very therapeutic, for me it symbolises a new year, new life and of course all the hopes and dreams that come with it. Those thoughts alone are what get me through these dark Winter days and I really can’t wait to see the allotment in full bloom again.
The sowing season really kicks off in March but there are a few seeds which can be sown now including chillis, tomatoes and aubergines to name a few (all of which I don’t grow…) However, here is the list of the seeds I did sow at the weekend:
- Cauliflower – All Year Round
- Calabrese – Ironman
- Cabbage – Greyhound
- Strawflower – Salmon Rose and Bright Rose
- Ammi Majus
- Antirrhinum – Circus Clowns
- Larkspur – Giant Imperial Mixed
Later this month I’ll also be sowing 2 varieties of sunflowers (Pike’s Peak and Soraya) and we need to pop to a garden centre to pick up this years Onion sets and shallots to give them a head start in module trays. Whilst we’re there we’ll also purchase our seed potatoes too so they can chit nicely for roughly 6 weeks before planting out on Good Friday.
P.S I’ve also been super busy these past couple of weeks finalising the 2021 allotment plan and I’m pleased to say that they are complete and all coloured in! I’ll head up the plot this week to photograph them so keep yours eyes peeled for a blog post next weekend.
