It’s already the middle of January and a quick visit to the allotment for the first time this year revealed a rather sad looking plot. I’m very late in getting the allotment ready for Spring this time around… Ideally I’d like to get all the vegetables beds dug over and to be on top of the weeds before Christmas but time just seemed to vanish with a blink of the eye!
The carrots have been left in the ground all Winter and have been harvested here and there for dinners, even though it’s great to be picking them in the depth of Winter I won’t be doing it again. The majority of the carrots I have been picking lately have been nibbled by various insects under the soil and unfortunately are too bad to be eaten… Which is a huge waste and one that I hate! This year I’ll be looking into different ways of storing root vegetables to make them last that bit longer without the threat of insects destroying them. So I picked the last of them and made a note to dig over that bed next weekend.
Another job I managed to get done last weekend was to prune the raspberry canes in the fruit cage. This whole area is a complete mess and I can’t wait to find time to finally get it sorted! But more importantly the canes needed pruning and because I have Autumn fruiting raspberries the canes had to be cut down to ground level as the fruits form on new growth. Whereas Summer fruiting raspberries needed pruning back in Autumn and fruit on last years growth. Therefore all the canes that bore fruit last year need cutting back and the new canes need tying into place ready for the Summer.
Next on the list of important jobs to do is prune both the gooseberry bushes and the blackcurrants as well as the grapevine, roses and all the various perennial flowers I have on the plot. Then after all that I can finally get digging!
As the sun began to fade I sat in the shed with a cup of tea and looked over my little slice of land. Yes it’s messy and looking a tad sad but in a few months time it will be green, lush and covered with flowers and I can not wait! I’ve been busy finalising my allotment plans and I’m so excited to share them with you all. I just need to decide on a few more herbs and flowers to fit into the flower patch before I upload all the plans on here and on Youtube too… I’m hoping to have it all ready to share with you at the weekend so keep an eye out!
Have a lovely week everyone x

Those canes have a nice color, aren’t they? Should be good for something, but I suppose the last thing you need is yet another task.
They were a tad prickly too! I’m sure I’ll find something for them to do 🙂
